Four-time series champion Alex Palou captured the top starting spot for Sunday’s Freedom 250 Grand Prix, a potentially one-time-only event taking place on the streets of Washington, D.C. Palou’s qualifying effort puts him in prime position to secure his fifth career IndyCar championship if he maintains a 163-point advantage through the race’s conclusion.

The qualifying session commenced after drivers spent the morning acclimating to the challenging seven-corner circuit. Multiple competitors encountered difficulties with the concrete walls during the opening round, including Marcus Ericsson, Rinus VeeKay and Will Power, while Ed Carpenter Racing’s Alexander Rossi unexpectedly exited early despite strong practice performances.

Kyle Kirkwood of Andretti Global topped the first group with a time of 56.773 seconds, ahead of Marcus Armstrong and Palou. Team Penske’s David Malukas posted the quickest overall time in the opening round but would have missed advancement had he competed in Kirkwood’s group due to the qualifying format’s competitive nature.

The six fastest qualifiers advanced to an exclusive single-car shootout. Kirkwood led off the final round and posted 57.466 seconds after nearly losing control entering Turn 1. Palou responded with a 56.899-second lap that proved decisive, edging Kirkwood by four-tenths of a second for pole position.

Palou will start alongside Kirkwood on the front row Sunday, with Scott McLaughlin and Christian Rasmussen occupying the second row. The 250-mile race around the National Mall will determine whether Palou clinches his fifth championship title.
