Nick Chubb announced his retirement from professional football on Friday evening, concluding a career that appeared destined for Canton before devastating injuries reshaped his final years. The Cleveland Browns running back, now 30, made the decision public through an Instagram post, stating he wanted to exit the sport while healthy and following a winning season.

Selected by Cleveland in 2018 just four picks after New England opted for Sony Michel, Chubb quickly vindicated the Browns’ choice. As a rookie, he rushed for 996 yards despite appearing in only nine games, signaling the arrival of an elite ball carrier.

From 2019 through 2022, Chubb established himself among the NFL’s most productive running backs, accumulating four consecutive 1,000-yard seasons while averaging over 5 yards per carry in each and earning four straight Pro Bowl selections. Over his first five seasons, he amassed 6,341 rushing yards and 48 rushing touchdowns, positioning himself as a legitimate Hall of Fame candidate.

The trajectory shifted dramatically in September 2023 when Chubb sustained a severe left knee injury against Pittsburgh that required two operations and sidelined him for the remainder of that season. Upon his return in 2024, he was noticeably diminished and subsequently suffered a broken foot that prematurely ended his comeback attempt.

In his retirement statement, Chubb reflected on his comebacks and injuries with perspective, writing that health represents true wealth and encouraging current players to recognize life exists beyond football. Despite acknowledging regrets about how certain events unfolded, he stated he harbors no fundamental regrets about his career trajectory.
