Los Angeles Dodgers President Stan Kasten moved to extinguish widespread conjecture about the team’s future Friday, insisting the franchise remains under Walter’s ownership with no sale contemplated. Speaking to reporters before a game against Pittsburgh, Kasten stated unequivocally that the organization is focused exclusively on winning championships going forward.
The speculation surfaced after billionaire owner Mark Walter agreed earlier this month to divest his controlling stake in the Los Angeles Lakers to businessmen Josh Kushner and Bob Iger for $12.5 billion, marking a record valuation for an NBA franchise. Walter had acquired his controlling interest in the Lakers from the Buss family the previous year.
Kasten emphasized Walter’s deep commitment to the Dodgers, characterizing the Lakers sale as a distinct opportunity rather than a signal of reduced focus on baseball. The 66-year-old Chicago-based CEO of Guggenheim Partners has presided over a dominant stretch that produced three World Series titles in six seasons and funded lucrative roster additions including four-time MVP Shohei Ohtani.
Federal prosecutors and the Securities and Exchange Commission are investigating Walter’s business empire for potential tax fraud, according to earlier media reports. Kasten stated the Dodgers organization itself faces no scrutiny as part of the inquiry, though he declined to elaborate further on details.
Walter also maintains ownership stakes in the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks, the Professional Women’s Hockey League, and TWG Motorsports, none of which are being marketed for sale, Kasten confirmed.
