World No. 1 Jannik Sinner announced his withdrawal from the U.S. Open on Friday, citing a right knee injury that has prevented him from returning to competition. The Italian tennis star has been sidelined since capturing the Wimbledon title last month and determined he lacked sufficient recovery time before the main draw begins Aug. 30.
In a statement posted to social media, Sinner explained that despite intensive work with his team and medical staff over recent days in Monte Carlo, additional time remains necessary to address the knee issue. “Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year,” he wrote.
Sinner expressed disappointment over missing the tournament, noting the venue’s significance in his career and his eagerness to compete before the sport’s passionate New York fanbase. The 2024 U.S. Open champion previously lost to Carlos Alcaraz in last year’s final at the same venue.
