64 Sea Turtle Hatchlings Rescued After Becoming Trapped in Florida Keys Pool

An Islamorada family’s swimming pool became an unexpected rescue site when dozens of newly hatched sea turtles wandered into the chlorinated water, drawn by the home’s outdoor lighting. The 64 hatchlings had become disoriented and strayed from their natural path to the ocean, a common occurrence when artificial light sources interfere with the animals’ navigation instincts.

Recognizing that the chlorinated environment would be fatal to the fragile creatures, the homeowners immediately contacted The Turtle Hospital for professional assistance. The facility’s team retrieved all 64 hatchlings and transported them to the facility for specialized care and rehabilitation.

Staff members at The Turtle Hospital cleaned the turtles and provided proper nourishment as the animals recovered from their ordeal over several days. Once the hatchlings had regained their strength and vitality, they were deemed ready to return to their natural habitat.

The rescued turtles were released into the ocean, where they were observed swimming vigorously into the Gulf Stream and away into open water. The incident illustrates both the dangers artificial lighting poses to marine wildlife and the importance of community involvement in turtle conservation efforts.
