The number of 24-hour restaurants across the United States declined 11 percent between January 2020 and January 2025, according to Yelp data released this year. Major metropolitan areas have been hit particularly hard, with Los Angeles losing 29 percent of its all-night dining options and Las Vegas experiencing a 9 percent drop. However, select cities including Baltimore, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Key West, Florida, have bucked the downward trend with increases ranging from 14 to 33 percent.
Labor shortages and shifting consumer habits have accelerated the closure of round-the-clock establishments, Yelp reported. Younger Americans are drinking less alcohol, reducing late-night foot traffic, while economic pressures tied to inflation and the lingering effects of the pandemic have dampened demand for sit-down dining. The emergence of GLP-1 weight-loss medications has also altered eating patterns, and survey data reveals Americans are increasingly cutting back on restaurant expenses due to affordability concerns.
The Red Arrow Diner, which first opened in Manchester, New Hampshire, in 1922, stands as a notable exception to the national decline. Co-owners Amanda Wihby and George Lawrence operate four Red Arrow locations throughout New Hampshire, all maintaining 24-hour service. The overnight crowd includes first responders, overnight shift workers, travelers, and late-night bar patrons seeking food and warmth.
Wihby emphasized the diner’s role as a community anchor during off-peak hours. The pandemic forced the owners to temporarily close three locations during night shifts, marking the first time in the business’s history they had to lock the doors. After several years of recovery efforts, all four restaurants returned to full 24-hour operations and are now thriving, the owners said.
Success at Red Arrow stems from consistent food quality, reasonable prices, and a welcoming atmosphere that attracts customers from all socioeconomic backgrounds, Wihby and Lawrence explained. The diner has cultivated a stable workforce, with several employees working there for more than a decade. One general manager began washing dishes as a teenager and worked his way up to running the Londonderry location while raising a family.
The diner has attracted notable patrons throughout its history, including presidential candidates and sitting presidents. Donald Trump visited the location in 2023 following a campaign rally. One menu item, “Stan the Man,” honors the late father of Hollywood actor Adam Sandler, who was a regular Sunday customer.
Navigating current economic headwinds requires daily problem-solving and cost management without sacrificing quality, Wihby said. The owners credit their loyal employee base and long-standing vendor relationships for enabling the business to persist in an industry facing unprecedented challenges. According to 2026 data from the National Restaurant Association, labor costs remain well above historical averages.
Wihby views the 24-hour diner as fundamentally American, serving as a democratizing space where people from different walks of life gather at the counter. As the practice becomes increasingly rare, she expressed confidence that the tradition will endure at Red Arrow through dedicated staff who remember customers by name or order and create lasting community connections.
