The Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints experienced a chaotic afternoon during their joint practice session in Oxnard, California on Tuesday, as tensions boiled over into multiple altercations. The summer training camp environment—marked by intense competition for roster spots, sweltering heat, and the pressure of facing opposing lineups—created conditions ripe for conflict between the two franchises.

The disturbance began with isolated skirmishes before escalating into a full-scale brawl involving numerous players. Cowboys safety Jalen Thompson found himself on the receiving end of a Suplex wrestling maneuver executed by Saints tight end Brock Rechsteiner, son of WWE Hall of Famer Scott Steiner. The incident exemplified the escalating aggression on the practice field.

Both punches and equipment became weapons during the melee. Saints center Erik McCoy launched a Cowboys player’s helmet away from the action, while Cowboys second-year linebacker Donovan Ezeiruaku similarly hurled McCoy’s helmet before throwing a punch that prompted his removal from practice. Cornerback Caelen Carson also exchanged punches, according to video footage obtained by the Dallas Morning News.

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer criticized the incident afterward, telling reporters he felt “disappointed” by the disruption and characterized the practice as “unfortunate” given his team’s lost training time. “Nobody wants this,” Schottenheimer said, adding that he was essentially “in charge of fight club” at that moment.

Saints linebacker Pete Werner acknowledged the competing interests at play during joint practices. He noted that while protecting teammates matters, players must also exercise restraint and professionalism to maximize the quality of work. Joint practices have replaced preseason games for veteran evaluations but are intended to function as controlled environments for skill development.

The Saints will not face the Cowboys again Wednesday, instead traveling to Los Angeles on Thursday for a joint practice session with the Rams.
