New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. converted a straightforward defensive play into an awkward moment of misdirected blame during Tuesday evening’s contest against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards. Following his mishandling of a routine ground ball, Chisholm immediately protested to the second-base umpire rather than accept responsibility for the error.

The play unfolded in the second inning with runners positioned at first and second base with no outs. Pitcher Carlos Rodon delivered a well-executed pitch that induced Christian Franklin to hit a double-play ball directly toward Chisholm. Instead of completing the inning-ending double play, Chisholm allowed the ball to bounce off his glove, loading the bases and putting runners in scoring position.

Video review immediately undermined Chisholm’s complaint against umpire Ryan Additon, showing the official positioned correctly while the infielder simply misplayed the grounder. Chisholm began protesting even before the ball came to rest, pointing toward Additon despite the umpire’s proper placement on the field.

Rodon rescued his teammate from a potential scoring opportunity by striking out both Carlos Narvaez and Jackson Holliday consecutively, stranding the loaded bases. The Yankees ultimately prevailed 3-1, preventing the defensive lapse from affecting the final outcome.

The incident highlights a difficult 2026 campaign for Chisholm, who entered Tuesday’s game carrying a .216 batting average after being benched over the preceding weekend. Chisholm previously acknowledged his struggles this season, saying the numbers reflect his overall performance throughout the year.
