Florida state Rep. Angie Nixon secured an upset victory over retired Army Lt. Col. Alex Vindman in Tuesday’s Democratic primary for the state’s U.S. Senate seat, earning her way into November’s general election. The primary win propels Nixon, a Jacksonville Democrat, toward a face-off against Trump-backed Republican incumbent Sen. Ashley Moody for the remainder of Marco Rubio’s former term, which runs through the end of his current six-year period.
Nixon’s triumph defied conventional political wisdom, as Vindman had substantially outraised her throughout the campaign. The retired lieutenant colonel, who gained national prominence as a central figure in President Donald Trump’s first impeachment inquiry, reported approximately $14.6 million in campaign receipts through June 30—more than 20 times Nixon’s roughly $625,000 during the same period, according to FEC records.
Nixon first entered the Florida House in 2020 after building a career in community organizing and labor advocacy. She served as state field director for SEIU Florida and as director of the Florida Public Service Union’s Higher Education Campaign, roles that shaped her campaign platform around worker protections and economic justice.
In a Fox News interview days before the primary, Nixon outlined progressive positions including abolishing ICE, implementing a nationwide rent freeze for at least one year, and implementing Medicare-for-all. She characterized immigration as a civil rather than criminal matter and blamed rising housing costs on corporate greed and insurance industry practices.
Questions about Nixon’s relationship with the Democratic Socialists of America emerged during the campaign. While she told public radio in July she held DSA membership, organization officials stated she had previously belonged to a local chapter and sought its endorsement without success, leaving her current membership status ambiguous.
Vindman’s entry into the race marked a significant effort to leverage his national profile following his role on the National Security Council, where he raised concerns about Trump’s 2019 call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and became a key witness during the impeachment inquiry.
No Democrat has won a Florida U.S. Senate election since 2012, positioning November’s general election as a major test of Democratic viability in the state. The winner will complete Rubio’s term, with the seat returning to regular electoral cycles in 2028.
Moody was appointed by GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis following Rubio’s departure to join the Trump administration. She must prevail in November to retain the seat through the remainder of the current term.
