Hector Castillo marked a significant milestone on Sunday when he cast his ballot as a newly naturalized U.S. citizen during early voting in South Florida. The Venezuelan-born voter described the experience as deeply meaningful, noting that having his vote counted carried profound personal significance. “Super special for me. I am feeling my vote is counting,” Castillo said at a polling location.
Early voting locations drew substantial crowds across Broward and Miami-Dade counties on Sunday, with voters seeking to participate in the primary elections ahead of election day. The Davie Cooper City Branch Library served as one of 21 early voting sites in Broward County, accommodating hundreds of voters throughout the day. Campaign volunteers positioned themselves at polling locations to make final appeals to undecided voters during the primary contest.
Voter Premi Sterlin brought family members to cast ballots early, citing the convenience of spreading participation across a full week rather than concentrating it on a single day. However, Sterlin noted that the volume of campaign volunteers and canvassers calling out endorsements near voting locations created an somewhat overwhelming atmosphere. “I am a little intimidated by the amount of people screaming at me when I got out of the car,” Sterlin said.
For immigrants like Castillo, the opportunity to vote represented a significant expression of gratitude for citizenship and participation in American democratic processes. Castillo wore his “I Voted” sticker with visible pride, emphasizing the emotional weight of exercising voting rights for the first time. “I’m enjoying this time, I don’t have words to make you feel what I’m feeling,” he said.
