Texas Democrat Cuellar Calls Out Socialist Groups for Hiding Radical Agenda Within Party

Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas has publicly criticized the Democratic Socialists of America, accusing the organization of leveraging Democratic Party infrastructure to advance an ideological agenda he views as fundamentally out of step with mainstream American politics. Speaking on “Saturday in America,” Cuellar argued that candidates backed by DSA groups strategically downplay their most contentious policy proposals when campaigning in Democratic strongholds.

The congressman detailed his concerns about specific DSA policy objectives, including Supreme Court restructuring, abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, elimination of the Senate, police defunding, and prison abolition. According to Cuellar, these positions receive minimal attention in the campaign communications of DSA-affiliated candidates, who instead focus messaging on issues with broader appeal such as housing affordability and cost of living.

Cuellar drew parallels to his own political experience, referencing his primary races against socialist-backed opponents. He noted that DSA and Justice Democrats organizations spent more than $20 million opposing him across two primary elections, both of which he won by campaigning on border security and support for the oil and gas sector in his South Texas district.

Recent DSA-backed electoral successes have prompted increased scrutiny of the movement’s growing foothold in Democratic politics. Melat Kiros, a DSA-supported candidate, defeated 15-term Rep. Diana DeGette in Colorado’s Democratic primary held in a heavily Democratic Denver district earlier this year.

New York witnessed comparable political upheaval in late June when multiple far-left candidates associated with Democratic Socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani secured primary victories. The results included Darializa Avila Chevalier defeating incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat and Brad Lander defeating incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman.
