The U.S. military executed a campaign of airstrikes Sunday targeting Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard in response to an attack in Jordan that resulted in deaths of American service members. The operation marks an escalation in the eight-day conflict between Washington and Tehran, with both nations exchanging strikes across the Middle East as they contest control of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
American forces destroyed Iranian military coastal surveillance systems, air defense installations, maritime assets, and storage facilities for missiles and drones, according to the Central Command’s account. The strikes featured both fighter jets and Tomahawk cruise missiles launched from naval vessels, with some targets located in mountainous terrain where the Revolutionary Guard maintains bases.
An Iranian attack on a Jordanian military base claimed the lives of two American service members, left one missing, and hospitalized four others. Since the broader conflict commenced, 16 U.S. service members have been killed and more than 430 wounded in total.
Iran reported that at least 50 people died and over 500 sustained injuries from the latest American strikes. Tehran has retaliated by targeting power and desalination infrastructure in Kuwait, with Iranian officials warning of further expansion of attacks throughout the region.
The United Arab Emirates issued a diplomatic statement urging restraint after Iranian state media quoted an anonymous official threatening to target Dubai and Abu Dhabi airports along with ports at Fujairah and Jebel Ali. The UAE Foreign Ministry condemned attacks on civilian infrastructure as violations of international law.
An interim agreement aimed at ending hostilities collapsed as tensions intensified. Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei warned of “unforgettable lessons” should attacks continue, while Iranian military officials pledged a “devastating response” to what they characterized as American covetousness and brutality.
