U.S. Marshals Service officers arrested internet personalities Andrew and Tristan Tate in Miami on Saturday, acting on an extradition request from British authorities. The dual U.S.-British citizens face allegations of rape and sex trafficking spanning 2010 to 2017, according to prosecutors across the Atlantic who announced the charges the same day.
The Tate brothers, whose online presence has centered on promoting wealth accumulation and male superiority while drawing criticism for misogynistic content, became among the internet’s most contentious figures. Andrew Tate, 39, gained initial prominence as a contestant on the British version of “Big Brother” in 2016 before building a substantial social media following. His younger brother Tristan is 38 years old.
Both men relocated to Romania in 2016 and were detained there in 2022 on suspicion of involvement in sexual exploitation schemes. Those proceedings halted due to legal and procedural complications, and they subsequently denied all accusations. The brothers maintain support for U.S. President Donald Trump and have been vocally aligned with his political positions.
Andrew Tate has accumulated over 10 million followers on platform X but faces bans from YouTube, TikTok and Instagram for hate speech violations. His statements have included assertions that assault victims bear responsibility for attacks, violent threats against women, and dismissal of mental health treatment seeking.
A federal court appearance in Miami is scheduled for early next week. Joseph McBride, the brothers’ attorney, characterized the British charges as baseless claims designed to obstruct pending U.S. defamation lawsuits filed by his clients.
