UK Bride’s Allergic Reaction to Eyelash Extensions Serves as Warning Before Wedding

A 26-year-old British illustrator experienced a severe allergic reaction to eyelash extensions that left her with swollen, red eyes days before her wedding. Polly Bibby underwent the procedure in early July after receiving a patch test with no apparent adverse effects, paying approximately $88 for the treatment. Within hours, her eyes became watery and sore, symptoms she initially attributed to hay fever.

The situation escalated when Bibby’s eyes began stinging and adhering together due to yellow discharge, prompting her to seek emergency care. Medical staff at Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Cambridge confirmed an allergic reaction to the eyelash extensions and prescribed antibiotics and antihistamines. She was instructed to wait three days before having the false lashes removed, during which time her vision became severely compromised.

Rebecca J. Taylor, a board-certified ophthalmologist in Nashville, outlined the risks associated with eyelash extension procedures, including eyelid or cornea trauma, infection, allergic reactions to adhesive, and temporary or permanent lash loss. According to Taylor, complications can arise from inadequate salon hygiene or damage sustained during application. Proper application by experienced aestheticians in sanitary settings using skin-safe chemicals is essential to minimize these dangers.

Bibby described the lash removal process as extremely painful and noted persistent redness, scabbing, and blurred vision afterward. She has decided against eyelash extensions for her wedding day and plans to use mascara instead. Now sharing her experience publicly, Bibby hopes to caution other brides about scheduling elective cosmetic procedures close to major life events.
