Superintendent Howard Hepburn toured Miramar High School on Friday to observe the institution’s specialized magnet programs, which feature advanced flight simulation technology and unmanned drone demonstrations. The visit comes days before the 2026-2027 academic year begins Monday, a transition period marked by heightened traffic from buses and families returning to school routines.

Hepburn emphasized the importance of safe passage for students during the back-to-school rush. “Traffic is going to be heavy with buses, and parents and students on the road, so we want to make sure our students go to school safely and come home safely as well,” the superintendent said.

Two students showcased their career ambitions to Hepburn during the visit: Cole Etter expressed his goal to become an aviation mechanic, while Kareen Pierre detailed aspirations to work in aerospace engineering and design. Their participation reflects the school’s commitment to career-focused instruction within the magnet framework.

Loli Formoso, a former principal and instructional director, credited the Space Florida Academy program as a catalyst for industry partnerships. The initiative connects students with professionals across aerospace, aviation, and engineering sectors, she explained, and will expand to eight additional Broward County high schools: Blanche Ely, Boyd H. Anderson, Coral Glades, Charles W. Flanagan, Northeast, Piper, Plantation, and Coral Springs.
