The Carolina Panthers opened the NFL preseason with a thrilling finish, as rookie quarterback Haynes King orchestrated a late-game drive that culminated in a 5-yard touchdown run to secure a 33-30 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in the Hall of Fame Game. The Georgia Tech product delivered an efficient performance through the air, accumulating 180 passing yards and two touchdown passes while adding 39 rushing yards in the contest.
Arizona mounted a fierce challenge, with quarterback Kedon Slovis threading a 1-yard touchdown pass to Bryson Green with under two minutes remaining to give the Cardinals a 30-27 advantage. The score set the stage for King’s final heroics, as both franchises had opted to keep their starting lineups benched for the exhibition matchup.
King’s fourth-quarter output proved decisive, including a 4-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Tyus III early in the final period that gave Carolina a 24-20 lead. He also connected with Ja’Seem Reed for a score in the second quarter as the Panthers overcame Arizona’s late surge.
Cardinals rookie Carson Beck, a third-round draft pick from Miami, compiled 188 passing yards and one touchdown in his preseason debut. The Hall of Fame Class of 2026 includes Drew Brees, Roger Craig, Adam Vinatieri, Larry Fitzgerald and Luke Kuechly.
