Missouri Democrat’s Comeback Bid Faces Scrutiny Over Activist Ties and Controversial Statements

Cori Bush, a former Missouri House member attempting to regain her congressional seat, has been documented campaigning alongside Christopher Winston, an activist whose social media presence contains inflammatory rhetoric supporting designated terrorist organizations and justifying violence against law enforcement. Winston, who operates online as “BlackRedGuard,” maintains a significant following where he regularly posts endorsements of Hamas and Hezbollah while attacking left-wing figures who refuse similar support.

Winston has produced content with the Democratic Socialists of America in which he has made statements appearing to rationalize violent attacks on police. In a 2024 YouTube appearance, he questioned the objections to firebombing police stations and subsequently argued that escalating violence would inspire mass participation in revolutionary movements when confronted about the practical implications of such acts.

The Bush campaign declined to specify Winston’s role within the organization or address the nature of their political relationship. The campaign instead redirected media inquiries by providing references to unrelated commentary about democratic socialism.

Winston’s online statements have consistently promoted the destruction of American institutions, repeatedly declaring the nation should be “unmade” rather than reformed. He has also advocated for desecrating the American flag, contending in multiple 2024 and 2025 posts that it symbolizes historical atrocities and deserves permanent disrespect.

In recorded remarks, Winston characterized his involvement with the Democratic Socialists of America as an opportunity to “brainwash” recruits, suggesting his participation serves tactical purposes rather than genuine ideological commitment to the organization’s official platform.

Bush’s current campaign has faced additional examination regarding payments totaling more than $20,000 to consulting firms connected to Rasha Mubarak, an activist with documented associations to the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Mubarak has worked with organizations under investigation for terrorism-related activities and has publicly advocated for police abolition while describing Israeli conduct as ethnic cleansing.

Bush’s previous campaigns received backing from activists Linda Sarsour and Marc Lamont Hill, both controversial figures within national political discourse. Sarsour has drawn accusations of antisemitism for equating Zionism with white supremacy, while Hill lost his CNN role following comments his university employer deemed antisemitic.

Bush’s congressional voting record reflects consistent opposition to pro-Israel measures. She and Representative Rashida Tlaib constituted the only two House members voting against a bill that would have denied immigration benefits to Hamas participants in the October 7 assault on Israel.

In the aftermath of the October 7 attack, Bush characterized Israeli actions as “military occupation and apartheid” and called for eliminating U.S. financial assistance. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre subsequently denounced comparable statements from Squad members as “wrong,” “repugnant,” and “disgraceful.”
