Connor Hellebuyck, the 33-year-old goaltender from Commerce, Michigan, publicly acknowledged Thursday that he has formally requested a trade from the Winnipeg Jets, where he has spent his entire 10-season NHL career. The three-time Vezina Trophy winner’s request comes after the Jets’ disappointing performance last season, prompting management to explore potential deals for the franchise cornerstone.
Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff signaled openness to fielding offers for Hellebuyck on Wednesday, noting that the organization remains willing to listen to proposals. Cheveldayoff acknowledged that Hellebuyck had expressed his desire for a change during exit meetings, though he declined to disclose specifics of those conversations.
In a statement issued through his agent, Hellebuyck explained his decision to go public with the trade request as training camp approaches. “I have tried to handle the situation quietly and respectfully while giving the organization time to explore its options,” he said. “My position has not changed. I believe moving on is the best path forward for me and my family.”
Following Hellebuyck’s announcement, Cheveldayoff released his own statement affirming the player’s openness about seeking a fresh start. “Connor has been an important part of the Winnipeg Jets organization for many years, and we have tremendous respect for what he has accomplished here,” the statement read. The team said it would continue working through the situation thoughtfully, with no immediate resolution in sight.
Hellebuyck’s trade request comes on the heels of his celebrated performance at the 2025 Winter Olympics in Milan, where he made 41 saves in the gold medal game to lift Team USA past Canada. His stellar play secured the men’s ice hockey gold medal for the United States for the first time since the 1980 Miracle on Ice team. President Trump announced during his State of the Union address that Hellebuyck would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of his Olympic achievement.
