President Donald Trump announced Friday that he will attend the Pentagon’s observance of the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The White House confirmed the president’s decision following his return from Houston, where he addressed reporters about his choice not to attend the New York ceremony at Ground Zero.
Vice President JD Vance will represent the administration at the New York event, while other senior officials plan to attend services in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where one of the four hijacked planes crashed. Trump, a New York native, last participated in the Ground Zero ceremony in 2024 but indicated the Pentagon event aligns with his schedule this year.
The 9/11 attacks, orchestrated by al-Qaida operatives in 2001, resulted in nearly 3,000 deaths across the three strike locations and fundamentally reshaped American foreign and defense policy. Trump used social media to reflect on the anniversary, calling it “a day to remember the victims, and their beautiful family members.”
Last year, Trump delivered remarks at the Pentagon ceremony, recounting details from the attacks including accounts from passengers aboard the hijacked aircraft. Vance had planned to join New York commemorations last year but diverted to Salt Lake City to support the family of conservative activist Charlie Kirk following his assassination.
