Texas Christian University’s athletic department has stripped the Fort Worth Star-Telegram of its credentials to cover Horned Frogs football, citing concerns about reporting on an incident that resulted in the dismissal of senior safety Jacob Fields. The decision came days before TCU’s season opener against North Carolina in Dublin on Saturday, where the paper’s reporter will be unable to access the press box.

The Star-Telegram initially reported on an altercation in the TCU locker room involving Fields and wide receiver Dozie Ezukanma. While the newspaper did not initially name Ezukanma directly, he subsequently posted a since-deleted Instagram video confirming his involvement in the incident. Fields was subsequently removed from the roster.

Athletic Director Mike Buddie justified the credential revocation by stating that an unnamed source provided inaccurate information to the newspaper, which the university disputed. Buddie said the reporting endangered a student-athlete and prompted threats against him and his family, prompting the department to withhold access until further dialogue occurs between athletics officials and the Star-Telegram’s sports staff.

The irony of TCU’s action is pronounced: the university’s home stadium bears the name of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s founder and former publisher. The athletic department has not outlined specific conditions for the newspaper to regain its credential privileges.
