A Sumter County man evading a traffic stop triggered a dangerous collision with a school bus carrying 19 children on Tuesday morning, authorities said. The incident unfolded after deputies spotted Qahiem Williams, 23, traveling 17 mph over the speed limit near The Villages Intermediate Center around 7:20 a.m. on County Road 466. All 19 students aboard the bus remained unharmed following the crash, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

When a deputy initiated a traffic stop, Williams allegedly accelerated and struck two vehicles at a nearby traffic light, damage that compromised his vehicle’s axle. The disabled car subsequently veered across lanes and collided head-on with the Sumter County school bus on County Road 103. Video evidence captured the violent impact, with Williams’ door appearing to swing open just before contact.

Williams fled the scene on foot immediately after the collision, with law enforcement in pursuit. Body camera footage documented a deputy apprehending Williams near a Walmart location shortly thereafter. He was transported to the Sumter County Detention Center after receiving medical clearance, where he was held without bond.

Williams faces multiple charges including fleeing or eluding police, driving with a suspended license, marijuana possession, hit-and-run, resisting arrest, and leaving the scene of a crash. He also had two outstanding Sumter County warrants for prior fleeing and suspended license violations. Sheriff Patrick Breeden issued a statement condemning Williams’ conduct, noting his history of similar behavior endangered community safety.
