Phoenix Mercury head coach Nate Tibbetts punted the question of the WNBA’s transgender eligibility standards to league leadership on Tuesday evening, as criticism of the policy mounted from prominent sports figures. Tibbetts declined to elaborate on the matter following his team’s 94-84 defeat to the Washington Mystics, stating that policy decisions rest with the league office rather than individual franchises.
Basketball Hall of Famer Charles Barkley, a former star with the Phoenix Suns, publicly criticized WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver earlier this week for what he characterized as inaction on the transgender athlete question. Barkley contended the two officials should have addressed the issue preemptively when they had the opportunity to do so.
The WNBA’s current eligibility framework remains vague on the specific issue. The league’s collective bargaining agreement stipulates that “only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA,” yet lacks explicit guidance on whether individuals assigned male at birth who identify as female may participate in the league.
Two prominent figures have announced plans to pursue entry into the WNBA Draft in connection with the policy debate. Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White have both signaled their intentions to participate in the selection process, intensifying scrutiny around the league’s standards.
Engelbert responded to the escalating controversy by characterizing efforts to spotlight the transgender eligibility issue as attempts to create division. She contended that outside parties with no investment in the league’s success were weaponizing the topic for political purposes.
