Democratic Senate nominee Angie Nixon contended Monday that wealthy individuals and elected officials deliberately starve public school funding to perpetuate what she calls the “school-to-prison pipeline” and capitalize on prison labor. Speaking on “Democracy Now!,” Nixon connected her push for universal childcare to broader criminal justice concerns, arguing that quality education diverts children away from incarceration.
Nixon elaborated that for-profit prisons and billionaires benefit financially from mass incarceration, creating perverse incentives to provide inadequate education. “Which is why they’re defunding public schools, because they want to usher them into the school-to-prison pipeline,” she stated, adding that officials profit more from imprisoned labor than from ensuring children receive quality instruction.
During the same interview, Nixon clarified her positions on policing and prisons, distinguishing between her opposition to for-profit incarceration and her actual stance on law enforcement. She stated she does not support defunding police departments but opposes surveillance technology that enables officer misconduct, referencing Flock cameras as an example of problematic tools.
Nixon has faced scrutiny over her membership in the Democratic Socialists of America, which she has defended while denying she is a socialist. She told “Meet the Press NOW” she joined the organization for its stances on public housing, healthcare, veteran services, and campaign finance reform, while rejecting its positions on abolishing the Senate or defunding the military.
Republican Rep. Carlos Gimenez of Florida challenged Nixon’s characterization, suggesting her denials lack credibility. “She’s either a bona fide socialist, or she’s not very smart, because she ended up being a member of the Democratic Socialists of America,” Gimenez told Fox News Digital, asserting that socialists routinely conceal their ideology until gaining power.
