Matthew Mayich, a prospect signed by the St. Louis Blues and currently a member of Arizona State University’s hockey roster, remains under medical care following a collapse during an outdoor training exercise last Thursday. The 21-year-old athlete from Stoney Creek, Ontario, lost consciousness during the morning workout session, prompting immediate hospitalization in Arizona.
ASU confirmed the incident but initially withheld the player’s identity to protect privacy. Vice President of Media Relations Chris Fiscus stated that the university was reviewing the circumstances surrounding the training event as the student-athlete continued receiving medical treatment.
Mayich was selected by St. Louis in the 2023 NHL Draft as the 170th overall pick. Blues President of Hockey Operations Doug Armstrong released a statement Wednesday expressing the organization’s support. “The entire Blues organization is keeping Matthew Mayich close to our hearts as we pray for his comfort and recovery while he continues to undergo medical treatment in Arizona,” Armstrong said, noting that the team remained in contact through the player’s agent.
Prior to joining ASU for the upcoming season, Mayich spent four years with the Ottawa 67’s of the Ontario Hockey League before a one-year stint at Clarkson University. The OHL also issued a statement, with league commissioner Bryan Crawford acknowledging Mayich’s four seasons in the league and expressing support for his recovery and family.
