Erickwoody Charles, 29, of Downtown Miami, was taken into custody Tuesday following a violent disturbance at the Starbucks location in Mary Brickell Village at 901 Southeast Miami Ave., according to police and detention records. The incident occurred Monday morning when witnesses reported an agitated man causing significant disruption inside the coffee shop by intimidating patrons and staff members.

During the Monday morning outbreak, Charles allegedly hurled items throughout the establishment, climbed onto the counter area, and used a chair to shatter the front glass entrance, according to an arrest report filed by Miami police. A security guard sustained an arm injury while attempting to restrain Charles during the altercation, investigators noted.

Officers also discovered evidence of property damage beyond the Starbucks. Charles had climbed onto vehicles parked nearby, leaving footprints on a truck bed cover and lying atop another passerby’s automobile, police documented in their report. He was apprehended at 8 a.m. Monday near Southeast Ninth Street and Brickell Plaza.

Fire rescue transported Charles to a hospital following his arrest, and Miami-Dade County corrections booked him at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center shortly after 1:20 p.m. Monday. He faced charges of battery and two counts of criminal mischief, records show.

Charles had been released on his own recognizance on August 21 after a judge set his bond at $5,000 in an earlier grand theft and burglary case filed July 20, court records indicate. Miami police arrested him July 19, and prosecutors charged him with grand theft and burglary days later. Circuit Judge Miguel M. de la O is presiding over both pending cases.

His criminal history in Miami-Dade dates back to a marijuana possession arrest when he was 19. At age 27, he accumulated convictions for misdemeanor battery, disorderly conduct, trespassing, and resisting arrest in Miami Beach, court documents show.
