The Chicago Cubs dominated the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 7-0 victory Monday evening in Phoenix, powered by back-to-back homers from Michael Conforto and catcher Carson Kelly. The decisive blast came in the sixth inning off reliever Taylor Clarke, with Conforto’s two-run shot to right field extending Chicago’s lead to 4-0 before Kelly followed with a solo homer to left. The shutout victory narrowed the Cubs’ deficit in the NL Central standings to 5 1/2 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers, who were idle Monday.
Cubs starter Kevin Gausman delivered a dominant performance on the mound, limiting Arizona to just three hits across seven innings while striking out six and walking one. The right-hander, acquired at the trade deadline from the Toronto Blue Jays, needed only 94 pitches to complete his outing in what marked his strongest appearance since joining Chicago. Gausman improved to 2-1 on the season with the efficient performance.
Chicago built its offensive advantage gradually before the explosive sixth inning. Pedro Ramírez drove in Ian Happ with a triple down the right-field line in the second inning for a 1-0 lead, and Seiya Suzuki’s double off the left-field wall scored Conforto to extend the advantage to 2-0 in the fifth. Conforto led the Cubs attack by reaching base four times, collecting a single, double, home run and walk.
Arizona’s Merrill Kelly took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks over 5 2/3 innings while striking out four. The Diamondbacks managed only five hits—all singles—in an anemic offensive showing. The teams continue their series Tuesday with Brandon Pfaadt (7-1, 3.39 ERA) starting for Arizona against Cubs right-hander Clay Holmes (5-6, 2.49).
