Simon Cowell is temporarily stepping back from his role as a judge on “America’s Got Talent” to address persistent back complications requiring surgical intervention. According to Fox News Digital, the television personality will be absent from the show’s taping schedule for several weeks while undergoing a medical procedure tied to longstanding spinal issues. Producers are currently identifying guest judges to serve as temporary replacements during his recovery period.

The planned surgery represents a routine intervention rather than treatment for a new or acute condition, according to reporting from TMZ. Cowell’s back troubles trace back to a 2020 electric-bike accident that resulted in severe spinal trauma. “When I saw the X-ray, I really nearly smashed my spine to pieces, so I literally wouldn’t (have) been able to walk,” Cowell recalled in an interview with Extra approximately half a year after the incident.

The talent judge sustained further injuries in a second e-bike mishap during 2022, fracturing his arm in that incident, according to sources who spoke with Fox News Digital. Cowell has remained open about the lasting physical toll from his 2020 accident, describing the immediate aftermath as a harrowing experience when he realized the severity of his spinal fracture.

Cowell’s career as a television personality began in 2001 when he joined the judging panel of the British program “Pop Idol,” where his forthright critiques and wit became defining characteristics. American television audiences became acquainted with him the following year as an original judge on “American Idol” alongside Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson, launching a television career that would span decades.

Beyond his judging roles, Cowell established himself as a prolific television producer and talent developer, creating “The X Factor” franchise and establishing the “Got Talent” series across multiple territories. His professional influence has shaped the careers of major recording acts, including One Direction, Fifth Harmony and Il Divo.
