A black bear transformed what should have been a routine shopping stop into an unforgettable wildlife encounter when it entered The Spice & Tea Exchange in Gatlinburg, Tennessee on Friday. Victoria Puyol and Joshua Card, who were marking their seventh wedding anniversary in the popular tourist destination, found themselves face-to-face with the uninvited visitor after it wandered through the store’s entrance.

Card initially spotted the animal near the doorway and alerted others in the shop. As the couple and a store clerk retreated to a safer location near the register, the bear proceeded deeper into the shop, showing keen interest in the merchandise. The animal tore into a display of sweet-tea blend and investigated various tea diffusers while onlookers gathered outside, according to the couple’s account.

An employee from an adjacent business attempted to deter the bear using an air horn, but the tactic proved ineffective. Card documented the encounter on video as the bear approached the counter, audibly speaking to the animal in a calm tone. The bear then climbed directly onto the counter, prompting Card to step back from the unexpected display of boldness.

Card, a military veteran with lifeguard experience, attributed his measured response to his emergency-situation background. He described the bear as appearing curious rather than aggressive and emphasized feeling uncertain about the young animal’s capabilities. Puyol reported feeling shocked rather than frightened by the proximity of the wild animal, which remained approximately eight feet away from her during much of the encounter.

Remarkably, Puyol had expressed to Card before the trip that she hoped to see a bear during their anniversary getaway. She later reflected on the irony of her wish being fulfilled under such intimate and unexpected circumstances. The bear eventually exited the shop on its own, allowing the couple and clerk to safely leave after confirming the animal had departed.

Store employees indicated the bear had visited the business previously that week, having entered earlier to obtain sugar supplies. Puyol estimated the entire incident lasted between 10 and 15 minutes. The couple characterized the encounter as an unusual chapter in an already eventful trip, with Card noting that the unexpected wildlife visit had enriched their anniversary experience.
