Tommy Edman broke through in the 10th inning Friday night, driving a line drive single to left field that scored automatic runner Kiké Hernández and gave the Los Angeles Dodgers a 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The clutch hit came with two strikes against Pirates reliever Gregory Soto, extending Los Angeles’ perfect record in extra innings this season to 5-0.
The sequence leading to Edman’s heroics saw pinch-hitter Alex Call strike out before Mookie Betts drew an intentional walk. Kyle Tucker then grounded into a fielder’s choice that eliminated Betts at second base before Edman’s game-winner. Evan Phillips earned the victory with one inning of relief work.
Pittsburgh mounted a late challenge when Oneil Cruz hit a two-run homer off reliever Kyle Hurt in the eighth inning to tie the contest at 4-4. The Pirates had taken a 1-0 lead on Nick Gonzales’ RBI single in the first, then knotted the score again at 2-2 with another Gonzales RBI single in the third.
Los Angeles built its lead through Mookie Betts’ two-run single with two outs in the third inning and Max Muncy’s two-run homer in the first. Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitched 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball, striking out nine while allowing five hits before being replaced.
The Dodgers improved to 8-2 in their last 11 games, maintaining their National League West lead. Saturday’s matchup features Pittsburgh’s Jared Jones facing Los Angeles’ Tarik Skubal, who is 0-2 since being acquired by the Dodgers earlier this month.
