House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., contended that a Democratic takeover of the chamber would trigger immediate impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump. Speaking to Fox News Digital, Scalise claimed the opposition party has made little effort to conceal such intentions, asserting that lawmakers would move to impeach on the first day of a Democratic majority.

Democrats successfully impeached Trump twice during their previous House majority, though neither effort resulted in Senate conviction. While party leadership has refrained from explicitly calling for additional impeachment measures following potential November gains, progressive members have already filed multiple impeachment resolutions targeting the president and his Cabinet officials.

The Democratic establishment has notably declined to support impeachment initiatives, even joining Republicans to defeat one proposal on the House floor in June 2025. Scalise and other GOP leaders have characterized the party’s direction as dominated by its leftmost faction, citing recent primary victories by socialist-aligned candidates over establishment Democrats nationwide.

Scalise framed the election as a choice between Republican candidates collaborating with Trump on affordability and Democratic competitors embracing socialist policies. He highlighted potential Republican gains in Maine, Texas, Ohio, and Florida, arguing voters are rejecting what he described as extreme leftist ideology on taxation, border security, and criminal justice reform.
