Jared Curtis reversed the typical college football recruiting paradigm by initiating contact with Vanderbilt rather than waiting for the program to pursue him aggressively. Coach Clark Lea initially had no plans to recruit Curtis seriously, believing the five-star prospect was beyond the Commodores’ reach as he navigated commitments to Georgia and Oregon. However, an unscripted practice visit during Vanderbilt’s bye week following a loss to Alabama in 2025 set unexpected events in motion.

Former Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia attended one of Curtis’s high school games on a Friday night and was struck by the talent he witnessed. That evening, Pavia called offensive coordinator Tim Beck to express his enthusiasm about the prospect. When Beck contacted Curtis the following Saturday morning, the quarterback revealed he had been closely watching Vanderbilt’s games throughout the season—the only team he had studied in detail.

Lea emphasized authenticity in his approach, rejecting a full-court press without an established relationship. His conversations with Curtis centered on mutual benefits rather than financial incentives initially. “There’s something inauthentic about a full-court press when you haven’t had a relationship,” Lea told OutKick, stressing his commitment to genuine presentation in recruitment.

When Curtis demonstrated sincere interest in joining the program, prominent Nashville investors became involved. Attorney Ryan Downton and his wife Pearl Downton, along with former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler and comedian Nate Bargatze, helped establish NIL opportunities. These relationships developed only after Curtis proved his commitment was authentic, not a negotiating tactic.

Curtis ultimately signed a multiyear NIL contract worth $10 million, but Pearl Downton emphasized the player made his decision independently. “He’s gotta wanna come here. Jared had to decide on his own,” she told OutKick. Curtis selected Vanderbilt over Georgia, embracing the opportunity to build something distinctive at a less-heralded program rather than chase immediate success elsewhere.
