Russian forces launched a sustained missile attack on Kyiv overnight Thursday that claimed at least six lives and left 33 others injured, Ukrainian emergency officials reported. The bombardment sent explosions reverberating through the capital as air raid sirens remained active well into early morning hours, forcing residents to take shelter throughout the night.
The barrage targeted 12 separate locations across three districts—Darnytskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, and Solomianskyi—striking residential complexes, healthcare facilities, and schools. Rescue personnel worked to extract civilians from collapsed structures and rubble, while fires erupted in multiple buildings across the city.
In the Solomianskyi district, the upper floors of a nine-story apartment building were completely destroyed, with additional blazes igniting on lower levels. Emergency responders also located trapped residents in two residential buildings and a school shelter in the area.
Moscow has increasingly relied on ballistic missile barrages to deplete Kyiv’s air defense capabilities, targeting a known vulnerability in Ukraine’s defensive posture. Ukrainian forces operate a limited inventory of systems capable of intercepting such threats, and supplies of ammunition for U.S.-provided Patriot batteries face chronic shortages.
U.S. President Donald Trump had previously approved technology licenses allowing Ukraine to manufacture Patriot air-defense components domestically, though he subsequently reversed that authorization. Ukraine has responded by escalating long-range strike operations against Russian weapons storage facilities, military installations, and strategic infrastructure to weaken Moscow’s operational capacity.
