A Bell 407 helicopter operated by Pennsylvania State Police and a Cessna 150 aircraft struck each other in midair Wednesday evening near Carlisle Airport in central Pennsylvania, resulting in one fatality and two injuries. The collision occurred around 7:50 p.m. at the airport, located approximately 120 miles west of Philadelphia, according to Federal Aviation Administration officials.
The civilian Cessna pilot, the sole occupant of the small aircraft, was killed in the crash. Pennsylvania State Police Acting Commissioner Lieutenant Colonel George Bivens stated that the plane veered unexpectedly to the right during the final moments before impact, striking the helicopter’s tail rotor and main rotor in what he characterized as a violent collision.
Two state troopers aboard the police helicopter sustained injuries during the accident. Both were initially trapped in the wreckage but managed to exit and received hospital treatment, according to Governor Josh Shapiro, who indicated they are expected to recover fully.
The National Transportation Safety Board will oversee the investigation with assistance from the Federal Aviation Administration. Authorities have not yet determined the probable cause of the collision, and the circumstances that prompted the Cessna’s sudden maneuver remain under investigation.
