Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville launched a scathing attack Thursday on the Democratic Party’s far-left faction, calling on members of the Democratic Socialists of America to abandon their use of the Democratic label. Speaking at a media conference, Carville expressed frustration that party moderates have been overshadowed by vocal socialist voices who, he argued, do not truly represent Democratic principles.
Carville’s comments came during an event promoting the Promise To America, a policy platform developed by House Representatives Tom Suozzi of New York and Adam Gray of California. The initiative emphasizes capitalism, public safety, fiscal responsibility, effective governance, common purpose, and patriotism as core Democratic values.
The moderate Democrats’ campaign reflects a broader party schism over ideology and direction as Republicans weaponize internal divisions ahead of November’s midterm elections. Carville asserted that approximately 80 percent of Democrats support the moderate agenda, yet far-left voices have dominated the party’s public messaging and identity.
Only 10 House Democrats have signed the Promise To America pledge so far, with just five congressional candidates among the signatories. Republicans have seized on the low adoption rate as evidence that socialists have captured party leadership, though Suozzi and Gray contended the pledge was designed to emphasize state and local engagement rather than Washington politics.
Senior Democratic leadership has remained largely silent on the socialist movement’s growing influence within the party ranks, neither endorsing nor opposing the moderate initiative publicly.
