Aisha Wahab, a California state legislator, won a special election held Thursday to fill the remainder of former U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell’s seat in Congress. The term will conclude in January, when the newly elected Congress is scheduled to be seated.

Wahab’s victory in the special election advances her from the state legislature to the federal level, where she will serve out the balance of Swalwell’s unexpired term in the House of Representatives.
