David Jolly, a onetime Republican lawmaker turned Democrat, secured the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in Florida on Tuesday, defeating multiple challengers in a primary contest to determine who will attempt to reclaim the governor’s office for the party. The victory sets the stage for a general election clash in a state that has consistently favored Republican candidates in statewide races, particularly during the Trump era.

Jolly represented Florida’s 13th Congressional District from 2014 to 2017 before losing his seat to Democratic challenger Charlie Crist. Following his electoral defeat, Jolly became increasingly vocal about his opposition to Trump and the Republican Party’s direction, eventually departing the GOP entirely last month to register with no party affiliation before launching his Democratic campaign.

The candidate has built his campaign messaging around his rejection of Trump’s influence on American politics and governance. In a campaign video, Jolly characterized Trump’s emergence in 2015 as a disruption of democratic institutions and positioned himself as capable of reversing that trajectory if Florida voters support him.

Jolly’s platform emphasizes insurance affordability, public school investment and campaign finance reform, alongside traditionally Democratic priorities such as abortion access. He has raised nearly $6.4 million for his campaign, according to state election records.

The general election on November 3 presents a formidable challenge for Jolly, as Florida has not elected a Democratic governor since 1994. Outgoing Gov. Ron DeSantis is barred by term limits from seeking a third term.
