A Miami Beach Police sergeant is being recognized as a hero after intervening to save the life of an elderly diner who began choking at a local establishment. The emergency occurred Saturday afternoon at La Vina Aragon Restaurant y Cafeteria, located at 8155 W. Eighth Ave. in Hialeah, during what started as an ordinary lunch break for Sgt. Alex Bello.
Bello was taking a meal break from his duties at a police property and evidence warehouse in Hialeah when he observed an 80-year-old man experiencing a choking episode. The sergeant immediately assessed the situation and administered the Heimlich maneuver, a critical intervention that proved effective in dislodging the obstruction and restoring the man’s ability to breathe.
The senior’s condition stabilized quickly following Bello’s swift action, with the man resuming normal breathing while remaining at the restaurant. Bystanders who witnessed the incident were relieved to see the successful outcome unfold before them, and authorities confirmed the man sustained no additional complications from the episode and was in good health when last assessed.
