Kai Trump, 19, shared details with Fox News Digital about the tearful period surrounding her departure to attend the University of Miami, a time when her mother Vanessa was undergoing treatment for breast cancer. The granddaughter of President Donald Trump characterized the days leading up to her freshman year as particularly difficult for both of them, marked by spontaneous emotional moments they shared together.

In May, Vanessa Trump made public her breast cancer diagnosis and said she was working with medical professionals to establish a treatment strategy. By June, she disclosed that she had undergone surgery and was transitioning into the next phase of her medical care. Kai said her mother’s recovery has progressed well since finishing initial treatment.

The summer preceding Kai’s college enrollment proved significant, as she reduced her competitive golf schedule to spend additional time with her mother. Kai characterized this period as unexpectedly positive, calling it a “blessing in disguise” that allowed her to prioritize family over her athletic pursuits.

Living relatively close to her mother’s home has eased Kai’s transition to college life. She expressed confidence that despite the distance, her mother remains readily available if needed, while also expressing optimism about the experiences ahead.
