A recreational visit to Glacier National Park in Montana ended fatally on July 11 when a rock dislodged from a cliff face penetrated the roof of a moving vehicle, striking a 72-year-old passenger in the head. Rex Schowengerdt, a Missouri resident, suffered catastrophic injuries and succumbed five days later at a regional hospital while his wife remained at his bedside.

The accident occurred along Going-to-the-Sun Road, a 50-mile scenic highway renowned for its sharp curves, steep grades and towering rock formations. Park officials confirmed the incident took place at Rimrocks, a section particularly vulnerable to falling debris from the surrounding alpine terrain. Schowengerdt was airlifted by helicopter to medical care following the collision.

His daughter, Amy Prince, described the ordeal in a family fundraising statement, noting that her father had embarked on the trip with enthusiasm to revisit meaningful locations. Schowengerdt was accompanied by his wife of 50 years, his sister and brother-in-law when the rock penetrated the hardtop Jeep’s cabin.

The Flathead County Coroner’s Office ruled the death accidental. Following several days in intensive care, the family authorized organ and tissue donation, which ultimately restored vision to two recipients through World Vision.

The family cremated Schowengerdt in Montana rather than transport his remains home due to prohibitive costs. They intend to establish a memorial in his name to honor his lifelong passion for outdoor exploration and family.
