The network CNN issued a sharp rebuke to the White House on Monday following a series of personal attacks directed at correspondent Kristen Holmes by the administration’s rapid response team. The exchange occurred as President Donald Trump fielded questions in the Oval Office, where he was meeting with 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams and 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai, who gained national attention following a viral ocean rescue.

Holmes posed a question to Trump regarding critical remarks made by Senator Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., who had claimed the president would prioritize personal pursuits over his duties. The White House’s Rapid Response 47 account on X subsequently launched into a scathing attack on Holmes, describing her as “a disgraceful, humiliating embarrassment” and calling her profession into question. The account also declared that “someday, your children will come across your disgusting and inhumane question,” suggesting her conduct was unbecoming.

CNN responded with a formal statement defending Holmes as “one of the most respected and accomplished journalists covering the White House.” The network characterized her question as legitimate, stating she had performed her role by asking “a tough, relevant, and newsworthy question on behalf of the American people.” CNN further asserted that while public officials may challenge reporting, personal attacks on journalists for their questions violate principles of free press.

During a subsequent exchange, Trump told Holmes to be quiet and dismissed her as a “fake reporter” and representative of “fake news.” The president directed his criticism toward her demeanor, calling her “loud” and “boisterous” while appealing to the young rescue victim seated beside him for agreement. The White House declined to comment beyond its posts on social media.
