A routine traffic enforcement action by the California Highway Patrol resulted in the discovery of a substantial cocaine cache in Merced County this week. On August 12, a Central Division canine officer stopped a 2025 Honda CR-V after observing a traffic violation, initiating what would become a major narcotics seizure.
The officer noted multiple red flags suggesting criminal conduct during the initial interaction with the vehicle’s occupant. A subsequent vehicle search yielded a bag containing approximately 30 pounds of suspected cocaine, with authorities estimating the street value at $817,200.
The driver was taken into custody and booked at the Merced County Main Jail on charges including possession of cocaine for sale and transportation of cocaine across non-contiguous counties. The Merced Area Gang Narcotics Enforcement Team (MAGNET) is conducting the ongoing investigation into the seizure.
The bust reflects an intensifying enforcement focus on drug trafficking in California. Last month, federal authorities recovered more than 1,000 pounds of cocaine hidden in truck floorboards at the Calexico Port of Entry, with a street value exceeding $20 million, while U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers discovered 278.88 pounds of cocaine concealed in a cucumber shipment at the Pharr International Bridge in Texas, valued at approximately $3.7 million.
