Phoenix Mercury head coach Nate Tibbetts expressed frustration during a Saturday media availability with what he characterized as divisive storytelling dominating discussion around the WNBA. The veteran coach argued that outside forces and media coverage have shifted focus away from competitive and human-interest angles that should define the league’s identity.
Tibbetts specifically defended Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White, who has faced criticism for her muted response following a hard foul involving Sophie Cunningham. He contended that White endures unfair scrutiny unseen by her counterparts in other professional sports and that her primary responsibility remains basketball coaching.
White has drawn scrutiny for her handling of the incident involving Fever guard DiJonai Carrington and her seemingly passive stance on protecting her roster. Cunningham previously made public statements regarding safeguarding women’s sports, drawing attention from activists and media figures on related matters.
Tibbetts attributed much of the league’s negative coverage to external agitators rather than internal organizational issues. He questioned whether coaches, players, or media bear responsibility for shifting the conversation back toward basketball and away from what he described as extraneous controversies.
