Portuguese soccer icon Cristiano Ronaldo indicated in a recent interview with Vogue that he expects the current season to mark the conclusion of his professional playing career. The 41-year-old athlete, widely regarded as one of soccer’s greatest talents, characterized the upcoming campaign as “probably my last year of football” during the conversation with the publication.
Ronaldo currently competes for Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr, where he has been a fixture since 2023. Through 107 matches with the Saudi outfit, the forward has recorded 102 goals, maintaining his prolific scoring pace well into his fifth decade of life.
Recent personal milestones may factor into Ronaldo’s decision, including his marriage to longtime partner Georgina Rodríguez and his focus on family priorities. The athlete suggested that transitioning away from competitive soccer will allow him to channel energy into other pursuits and enjoy the fruits of his labors accumulated over 25 years in the sport.
Ronaldo concluded his international career following Portugal’s Round of 16 exit at the World Cup, where Spain defeated the Portuguese squad 1-0 in regulation play. He finished his World Cup tenure with 11 goals across 27 appearances and accumulated 146 goals in 233 total international matches for Portugal.
If the current season proves to be his final, Ronaldo’s last match would occur on May 28, 2027, when Al-Nassr concludes its campaign. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner emphasized his desire to depart the sport leaving “a spectacular legacy” while pursuing other interests including padel, travel, and leisure activities.
