The New York Mets became the latest organization to lampoon Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels on social media, capitalizing on a brewing dispute between the star signal-caller and his former school LSU. The trolling centers on Daniels sending a cease-and-desist letter to the university this month objecting to the use of his name, image and likeness without authorization.
Following a 4-1 victory over the Washington Nationals on Tuesday, the Mets posted a quip on X aimed squarely at Daniels, who won the Heisman Trophy with the Tigers in 2023. The team wrote that it “stopped at 4 out of respect for Jayden Daniels,” a reference to the number of runs scored and the quarterback’s ongoing grievance over No. 5 jersey usage at LSU.
Daniels and his representatives took issue with head coach Lane Kiffin permitting reserve quarterback DJ Pickett to wear the number, viewing the decision as disrespectful to the former star’s legacy. The quarterback addressed the controversy Thursday in a social media statement, emphasizing his focus on training camp and the upcoming NFL season with the Commanders while expressing hope for a private resolution.
The internet mockery has extended beyond the Mets, with ticketing platform StubHub announcing it would no longer sell tickets in groups of five as a tongue-in-cheek jab at Daniels. As the regular season approaches, the quarterback faces a mounting social media blitz that threatens to overshadow his professional debut.
