Carly Simon Addresses James Taylor Marriage on New Album With Haunting Lyric ‘Maybe I Never Loved You’

Carly Simon’s upcoming album “Comes in Waves” features lyrics that appear to directly reference her former husband James Taylor, with the Grammy-winning artist questioning the nature of their past relationship. The song includes the provocative line “Maybe I never loved you,” repeated throughout the track with varying degrees of uncertainty and emotional complexity that underscore Simon’s ambivalence about their decade together.

Simon and Taylor were married on November 3, 1972, in a private ceremony at her New York home after meeting at Carnegie Hall the previous year. The marriage dissolved in 1981 with their divorce becoming final in 1983, producing two children: Sally Taylor and Ben Taylor. Their relationship, once viewed as a celebrated music industry partnership, deteriorated significantly behind closed doors as Taylor struggled with substance abuse and both parties acknowledged infidelity.

The new album marks Simon’s return to recording after an 18-year gap from releasing original music. In her introspective songwriting, Simon explores the contradictions of her emotions, singing “Maybe you never loved me / Although God knows, you said you did” while simultaneously questioning her own capacity to have truly loved him during their turbulent years together.

Simon has largely withdrawn from public view while managing significant health challenges, including a recent Parkinson’s disease diagnosis and basal cell carcinoma surgery. The 83-year-old artist explained to People magazine that adjusting to her diagnosis required considerable time and reflection before she felt comfortable discussing it publicly.

In a 2015 interview following her memoir “Boys in the Trees,” Simon described their marriage as fundamentally different from its public perception and characterized their emotional dynamic as unstable. She wrote that their relationship “switched from love to hate, lust to loathing, and back again, sometimes within a day,” reflecting years of documented conflict.
