McConaughey Offers Status Update on Potential ‘Yellowstone’ Spin-Off Project

Matthew McConaughey addressed speculation about a potential “Yellowstone” spin-off during an appearance on The Playlist’s “Discourse” podcast, tempering expectations while acknowledging continued dialogue with creator Taylor Sheridan. The 56-year-old actor emphasized that discussions remain preliminary, with no concrete developments to announce at this stage.

McConaughey explained that his conversations with Sheridan have persisted over time but have not yet crystallized into a viable project. “Nothing’s real yet,” McConaughey stated, while noting that both parties continue to explore what such a collaboration might entail and whether it aligns with their creative vision.

Speculation about a McConaughey-Sheridan partnership first emerged in 2023 as “Yellowstone” navigated its final season and uncertainty surrounding Kevin Costner’s involvement with the show. During the hiatus between the season’s two halves, reports suggested the pair were negotiating terms for a potential spinoff centered on the franchise’s universe.

Sheridan previously told The Hollywood Reporter in June 2023 that McConaughey represented an ideal fit for such a venture. The creator recalled that after McConaughey began viewing “Yellowstone,” he expressed enthusiasm for exploring the show’s core appeal: the clash between untamed frontiers and contemporary society.

“Yellowstone” concluded its run in December 2024 without Costner, whose character received an off-screen death. Meanwhile, costars Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly are moving forward with “Dutton Ranch,” a spinoff premiering in 2025 that relocates their characters from Montana to Texas.
