During Tuesday’s episode of “Live with Kelly and Mark,” Mark Consuelos made a humorous declaration about his priorities in his 30-year marriage to Kelly Ripa. When the hosts discussed how couples handle pet custody disputes, Consuelos stated he would accept a “loveless marriage” if it meant keeping daily access to their dog Lena.

Ripa sarcastically offered to arrange exactly that scenario, prompting Consuelos to elaborate that losing Lena in a divorce would cause him to “stay up at night, wondering what she is doing.” The banter emerged as the couple discussed a new Pennsylvania bill that would elevate pets’ legal status from property to family members in divorce proceedings.

The couple rescued Lena, a Maltese and Shih Tzu mix, in 2021 after the dog appeared in an adoption segment on their show. Ripa initially worried Lena would not mesh with Chewie, another Shih Tzu the hosts adopted in 2007, though the dogs bonded immediately. Chewie passed away last year at age 17.

Ripa and Consuelos, who share three children, have championed pet rescue efforts on their program. In 2022, Ripa encouraged viewers to adopt shelter animals, praising their gratitude and loyalty to families willing to give them second chances.
