Miami Beach officials announced Thursday the opening of four collection points where residents can donate supplies to assist those affected by Monday’s powerful earthquake in Colombia. The 7.4-magnitude tremor devastated western regions of the South American nation, resulting in a confirmed death toll of at least 265 people. A subsequent 4.2-magnitude aftershock struck Thursday in San José del Palmar, located in the Chocó region, according to the Colombian Geological Survey.
Miami Beach Fire Rescue will operate the donation stations from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily beginning Friday through August 31. The four collection points are stationed at 1051 Jefferson Ave., 2300 Pine Tree Drive, 5303 Collins Ave., and 6880 Indian Creek Drive throughout the city.
The city is seeking new camping equipment, hygiene products, first-aid supplies, tarps, and canned goods from donors. Municipal workers will transport all collected materials to the warehouse operated by Global Empowerment Mission, a nonprofit organization based in Doral within Miami-Dade County, for eventual delivery to affected communities.
