Jayden Daniels Demands LSU Stop Using His Name and Image Over Jersey Decision

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has instructed LSU to cease all use of his name, image and likeness, citing frustration over the university’s decision to assign his former No. 5 jersey to cornerback D.J. Pickett. The 2023 Heisman Trophy winner’s representatives sent the cease-and-desist letter to LSU athletic director Verge Ausberry this week, according to documents obtained by ESPN.

Daniels wore No. 5 throughout his two-year tenure with the Tigers and had made clear his preference that the number remain unassigned following his departure. LSU has not formally retired the jersey, making Pickett the first player to don the number since Daniels left for the NFL. The cornerback, a five-star recruit standing 6-foot-5, recorded three interceptions last season as a freshman while wearing No. 3.

A statement from Daniels’ spokesperson characterized the decision as a breach of trust. “His Heisman Trophy-winning season and everything he accomplished on and off the field cemented his place in LSU history,” the statement read. “To see his number given to another player is incredibly disappointing and feels like a failure to honor the significance of what Jayden accomplished at LSU.”

LSU coach Lane Kiffin defended the move during an Aug. 5 media session, explaining that Pickett was promised the opportunity to wear No. 5 when he committed to the program in December 2024 under then-head coach Brian Kelly. Kelly was fired in October 2025, and Kiffin was hired at the conclusion of the regular season. “When a kid’s promised something to come to a school, he should wear it,” Kiffin stated.
