Robert Gilman, a former U.S. Marine held in Russian custody for more than 1,660 days, arrived home Tuesday in severely diminished physical condition. Kieran Ramsey, representing the Gilman family, disclosed that the veteran is “very frail” and unable to walk independently from the aircraft, requiring immediate medical intervention across multiple disciplines.
Gilman faces an extended recovery process that will demand intensive psychiatric care, physical rehabilitation, and dental treatment. According to accounts from those familiar with his case, the detainee endured physical torture, forced pharmaceutical administration, and psychological abuse during his extended confinement in Russian facilities.
The Marine’s detention began after he traveled toward Moldova while passing through Russia and fell seriously ill. Russian authorities arrested him on charges of assaulting police officers, allegations widely dismissed as fabricated by observers and officials including Massachusetts Democratic Senator Ed Markey, who advocated on his behalf.
Ramsey characterized Gilman’s case as part of a systematic pattern targeting Americans abroad. He referenced similar cases involving Marines Trevor Reed and Paul Whelan, while indicating that at least ten additional Americans currently face comparable circumstances, five represented by his firm.
Ramsey expressed gratitude to the Trump administration for securing Gilman’s release and called on President Trump and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to pursue the freedom of remaining detained Americans overseas.
